The new IJS contest HAS ARRIVED!

Want to be part of MAKING A MOVIE? Well here's your chance. IJS fans who donate just $5 to this campaign will get the chance to submit their own IJS phrase to be used in the film. The winning phrase will appear on a custom tee shirt, worn by David - a main character in the film! He's a college aged physics geek - so keep that in mind when submitting your entries.

Once filming is complete - the winner will receive the actual shirt, along with a prize pack (details below)!

Here's how it will work - follow the link, make a donation to the campaign, then post your IJS phrase on the film's page wall on facebook here: The Quantum Suicide of Sophie Miller.

Am I selling out?

No. The IJS page has been up for almost 3 years, and you all know I don't make a habit of trying to sell stuff on here. In fact I have never tried to make any money - and I've turned down significant offers to sell the FB page.

This film is an awesome project, and it's something VERY important to me - I've produced this story twice as a stage play, and now we have the chance to make it into a movie - and I want you all to be part of that. Frankly - I need your help.

Please - drop $5 into the campaign, and give us your best creative input!

Details:

Contest will run from 2/1 - 2/21
All IJS fans will then have the opportunity to vote on the entries, narrowing them down to 10
The film's producers will select the winning entries

The top 3 will receive prize packs outlined below:

Winner: Custom tee-shirt used in the film. Signed copy of the completed DVD & Soundtrack
2 Runners Up: Signed copy of the completed DVD & Soundtrack

New single out soon...

I couldn't believe it when I came across this guy on facebook. His name is Matt Gary and he's a relatively new country music artist. He's got a new single coming out called I'm Just Sayin' and it's pretty catchy. I like it... I'm just sayin'... (listen). Also be sure to check him out on facebook and become a fan to stay plugged in.

Good luck Matt - from what I've seen you've got what it takes to be the next big thing...

Machines: Robots and Humans

This contest got me thinking. Sure - I'm a little late to the game here but I'd still like to try to make my point.

Machines.

As far back as human history can take us, and likely even farther - we've been looking for ways to off-load some of the work we have to do. The first time some cave man jammed a stick under a rock to lift it off the ground - that's the birth of machines. True - they've evolved a great deal more than we have in the intervening time, but that's where it started. One guy in a million who had just a little more brain than brawn and BAM! The lever was born.

Now you might say "Wait! That's just a tool!" I'd argue that it's a machine - a very simple machine to be sure, but a machine nonetheless. Think about it - there are multiple parts and they must be used in conjunction with one another in order to have the desired effect. A screwdriver is a tool, a ratcheting screwdriver is a machine. A hammer is a tool, a jack-hammer is a machine. See my point?

So that's where it started. Since then machines have evolved into complex networks of pulleys, levers, gears, jigs, ropes, cogs, baffles, billows, mills, livestock, slaves, and on and on through the middle ages, then into the industrial revolution, the birth of the automotive industry, transatlantic flight, the computer, the microprocessor... the telephone... the cell phone... on and on...

Think about how far machines have come in the last 800 years. What's the one consistency?

Man.

We are behind every great machine (or robot) that has ever been built or even imagined. Ultimately each step in the evolution of machines can be traced back to a single pair of human hands. That first stick wedged under that rock was held in a pair of hairy human hands.

No machine has ever been able to replicate the quality of hand craftsmanship - I don't care if you're building a wristwatch or a birdhouse - a skilled pair of human hands will beat a factory robot every time. Sure a robot can crank out 30 birdhouses (or cheap wristwatches) in an hour, but how long will they last? A handmade wristwatch could last forever - what's the warranty on that Casio you're sporting?

Human hands. The single continuous thread present in every significant accomplishment in machinery or robotics since the dawn of the human race. An elegant machine indeed. No matter how many attempts we make to render it obsolete - each advance in manufacturing technology, mobile communications, voice command interfaces - we'll never replace the one tool that started it all - The Human Hand.

The Contest Winner!

I just posted the design for the winning phrase. It took me some time to develop, and I have to thank my wife for helping me think of it. It's actually a deceptively thought provoking phrase, and I'd like to thank Kaymie for submitting it along with everyone who took part in the contest. I hope it was fun for you guys - I enjoyed reading all the entries, and designing the shirt.

A little about the design:

It's clearly a play on the WalMart logo. WalMart has done at least as much as crooked, over-paid politicians to ruin this country. As it turns out - Kaymie's phrase presented the perfect opportunity to take a shot at both.

Again - I hope you guys like it. I may post up some designs from some of the other entries. If there are any you'd really like to see - just let me know and I'll start there.

Thanks again - you guys ROCK!

The results are in...

It was a close race folks... two decisive favorites battled it out late in the polls, but in the end there could be only one!

Well, there were a few ties, but still... I'm just sayin'...

Overall - here's how the vote turned out:

Tied for last place with a whopping 4 votes each:

- (life hands me lemons) Uhm... WTF am I supposed to do with these? I'm just sayin'...

- The green and purple polka dotted monkeys dancing around the room make me happy. I'm just sayin'...

I have to say I'm bummed these didn't get more traction. Then again, I'm looking at this thing from a different perspective - I have to design the winning t-shirt ya know...

Edging those two winners out at 5 votes:

- You type SMH and LOL but are you really? I'm just sayin'...

Hey - maybe this marks a downward trend in irritating web acronyms...
Nah we'd never get that lucky... IJS...

Next up - another tie with 9 votes each:

- That's what she said... Dude, really? I'm just sayin'...
- If I wasn't wearing this shirt, my tits would be staring at YOU. I'm Just Sayin'...
- I don't NEED no stinkin' t-shirt! I'm just sayin'...

Two of these make t-shirt references in a t-shirt contest... that alone is funny to me... They'd each make great designs, but on the page they get little reaction it seems...

And the first phrase to miss out on the top five - with twelve votes:
- I ignored your last 24 calls for a reason. I'm just sayin'...

Who hasn't been here before? Seriously... stop calling.

Coming in fifth with a total of 15 votes:

- When I was your age I lost my tooth not my virginity... I'm just sayin'...

It's funny 'cause it's true...

Tied for 4th with 21 votes each:
- I'm not in a bad mood... You're just annoying. I'm just sayin'...
- I have PMS and a gun... I'm just sayin'...

I think I've actually heard these said in conversation before... don't ask...
Scooping the bronze with 24 votes:

- Twilight pretty much ruined vampires. I'm just sayin'...

Again, it's funny because it's true...

With 43 votes, the silver goes to:

- Money can't buy you happiness... But I'd rather cry in my Ferrari... I'm just sayin'...

I was really pulling for this one late in the polls - I already had the design worked out in my head...

And finally! The winner of a custom designed t-shirt (to be revealed shortly) by just 3 votes coming in at 46 total:

- Minimum wage for politicians. I'm just sayin'...
I'm honestly surprised and encouraged by these results - could this be reflective of a more politically aware culture on the rise? Nah - we just hate politicians... effin' crooks... I'm just sayin'...

Thanks to everyone for contributing and voting! We're hoping to add more content like this in the coming weeks and months - if you have any ideas feel free to shoot them over to justsayin.us@gmail.com. I'm looking for contributing writers/content creators so again - feel free to drop me a line.

Waffle House: A love story...

Have you ever eaten at a Waffle House? If you haven't, find the nearest location, and head there immediately (as soon as you finish reading this).

In my myriad travels up and down the I-95 corridor I've seen more than a few of these establishments. They can usually be found on the outskirts of a remote town, or in the armpit of some forgotten suburb - areas practically devoid of culture. In other words; dominated by white trash, strip malls, off brand big box stores, self-storage centers, and used tire service stations. All of this sets the backdrop for what occurs, on instinct, as a bad dining decision. Instincts can fail you sometimes. True story.

At first glance, the building immediately gives you the appropriate vibe. The simple branding says "Are you literate? Good - come have some waffles...". The "open 24 hours" sign says "Did you just leave a crime scene? Great, hang here for a while... I mean who'd look for you in a Waffle House?". Truth in advertising people. When you see a Waffle House you immediately think something like "I'll bet there are at least 2 crack heads in there...". About 8 out of 10 times you'd probably be right... But that's no reason not to eat there... I'm just sayin'...

A reliable standard for anyone consistently awake after 11PM; from truckers and feral teens to cops and deranged lunatics, Waffle House has been distending stomachs and satisfying appetites since 1955. Literally hundreds of locations scatter the United States.

There are innumerable reasons to add "Eat at Waffle House" to your bucket list... but here are the top 10:

10. Because the sign is like a triple word score in Scrabble.

9. Because you think yo know what to expect. If you've eaten at Denny's or Ihop, you have no idea what you're missing. Waffle House stands head and shoulders above both of these 2 so-called restaurants.

8. Because they created an entire menu beyond waffles, but you'll probably only need about 10% of it.

7. Because you need a little perspective. Too much time spent in a TGIFriday's can warp your outlook on life. It's not Friday everyday, no matter how many Jack Daniel's ribletts you scarf down.

6. Because there's more to American poverty than just WalMart.

5. Because of the "Open Kitchen" layout. You can watch them cook your food - from mixing and pouring the batter, to working the griddle - it's all in plain view.

4. Because fresh waffle batter baking in a hot iron smells like drunken teenage girls making out.

3. Because Waffle House hash browns could easily kick the s*it out of your little brother. Seriously.

2. Because otherwise, you'll never know if any of this is true.

1. For the waffles. They're fuc*king delicious. I'm just sayin'...

Now - head to the nearest Waffle House, and report back here on your experience. If you've already been, I'd love to hear your thoughts...

I'm just sayin'...

The best revenge is good living... And staying in shape...

OK... totally random, but I thought I'd share.

I just saw some facebook pics of this girl I used to have the biggest crush on in like grade school. She turned into a mega-bitch in high school - one of your typical high school elitist snobs. If this girl was in "Fired Up!" she'd be a Panther. She thought she was hot sh*t, and dressed like a slut to drive us "lesser mortals" crazy...

You know the type...

Now she's "the heavy friend" in all the group pics. Win.

That's even better than her just going ahead and getting fat. You can tell she's just clinging to the memory of being the hot girl - and now she's on the outside looking in.

She's got the double chin going. She can't wear jeans.

That's the best revenge...

Yeah - it's childish of me, I know but f*cking sue me. It's a rare thing to see someone get what's coming to them. To witness instant karma (the true definition - within the same lifetime).

That's a good feeling, and I don't care how childish that makes me.

I'm just sayin'...

This plan really came together... I'm just sayin'...

So - I recently saw The A-Team. Yeah. I'm late. Sue me.

The movie was pure, unadulterated, awesome. It was made from only the finest raw awesome bullion imported from the world's most remote and dangerous locales. Places you might find King Leonidas sharpening a spear, or Wolverine devouring the last guy to call Silver Fox lame, or Chuck Norris playing beer pong and getting a mani/pedi.

Eff it, I'll use the cliche... It's a non-stop-mother-fu*king thrill-ride from start to finish. I'm just sayin'...

First - let's talk about casting... (Potential spoilers. You've been warned.)

Hannibal: Liam Neeson
Not terrible casting, although I must admit I was skeptical when I heard about it. As a fan of the series, I have to say I missed seeing the old man disguise himself to fool the marks, but it's an origin story so perhaps we'll see some of that in the [inevitable] sequel. Some alternates I though might have done just as good - Michael Douglas, Kurt Russell, or even Dennis Hopper (too soon?). In the end, none of these (or anyone else, I'd challenge) would've done better than Liam Neeson, and for crap's sake the man's in mourning so let him work. He got the character right, brought a grittier edge to Hannibal, and showed the real badass behind the plan (and the cigar).

Face: Bradley Cooper
Perfect. There's little else to say here. He could've been clean shaven, but eh? Who gives a s*it... The only scene that didn't feel right was the opening hostage scenario. He takes a shot to the face and laughs it off, then asks "is that all you got!?". He does this in a way only Bradley Cooper can pull off without sounding overly macho. Again - its' an origin story so I'll hold out for the sequel to see if Face develops his penchant for preening, and reclaims his trademark line "not in the face!". Looking at the currently available pool of actors, I can't think of a better choice for this role, and (aside form script issues) Cooper nails it.

B.A. Baracus: Quinton "Rampage" Jackson
If you have to re-cast this role (and based on the recent pics of Mr. T I've seen, you do) I suppose Rampage is as good as the next guy. They'll all pale in comparison to the legend. The film throws in a nice homage to the lovable B.A. we all remember, but Mr. T was just more likable. Getting past that is easy, because aside from a conflict of conscience halfway through the film (in retrospect, an unnecessary diversion we could've all done without...), and an awkward staring match with a bathroom mirror - B.A. is exactly what he should be - a foil for Murdock. Lines are delivered well, and in a scene that ranks as one of the coolest I've seen this year - we learn just why B.A. is afraid to fly (and why he's got it in for Murdock). Which brings us to...

H.M. Murdock: Sharlto Copely
Wow. I was totally blown away by this guy. I loved his "performance" in District 9, but I clearly didn't give him enough credit as an actor. He nails the character of Howlin' Mad Murdock to a "T" - from a mid-air stall in a medi-vac chopper to a rousing mid-montage rendition of Mel Gibson's Braveheart speech, Sharlto laid the smack down, and frankly - he stole the show. I'm just sayin'...

The Plot... we had one of those around here somewhere, right?

Yes we did - and it was fun to watch and easy to follow, with a few interesting twists I didn't expect. It doesn't hurt that series creator Stephen J. Cannell was heavily involved. The fellas are each introduced, form a team, get into trouble, and wham - a conflict is nicely developed. There are some entertaining (and some chuckle inducing) side plots/personal struggles, and overall the 'Team makes the jump to the big screen in style.

The story follows our heroes as they kick copious sums of ass over the course of a couple hours. From jacking currency plates from Saddam loyalists, to busting Face out of prison in a tanning bed (don't ask), to playing "3 Card Monty" with massive storage crates on a shipping dock... Hell - they even fly a f*cking TANK... Yes. They fly a tank. And it totally works. Without causing my suspension of disbelief to totally collapse... I'll say it again...

Non-stop-mother-fu*kin'-thrill-ride.

From start to finish.

It won't win any Oscars, but it's one of the best ways to spend $20 at a movie theater without those goofy 3D glasses on your face.

I'm just sayin'...

**I added the Amazon Movie Trailer widget to the page today. I added it because I love movie trailers - if there are any you'd like me to try to find, let me know here and I'll do what I can. Comments welcome**

The voting starts now!

Check out the poll on the right! Vote as often as you like, because really - there's no way for me to police that shit. At the end of the day it's for a friggin' t-shirt... if you're cheating to win a t-shirt, I'm wondering how you have a computer with Internet access... I'm just sayin'...

I had a hard time narrowing them down - there were some great entries that wound up getting cut. If your entry didn't make it, but you'd like to get a t-shirt design made for it - let me know.

Voting ends in a week, and results are tallied by this shandy dandy polling app I used. So you know it's legit... Or at least that I'm not rigging it...

As a preview - here are the top 13 you'll be voting on.

THE TOP THIRTEEN!

1. The green and purple polka dotted monkeys dancing around the room make me happy. I'm just sayin'...

2. That's what she said... Dude, really? I'm just sayin'...

3. Twilight pretty much ruined vampires. I'm just sayin'...

4. (life hands me lemons) Uhm... WTF am I supposed to do with these? I'm just sayin'...

5. If I wasn't wearing this shirt, my tits would be staring at YOU. I'm Just Sayin'...

6. I don't NEED no stinkin' t-shirt! I'm just sayin'...

7. I'm not in a bad mood... You're just annoying. I'm just sayin'...

8. When I was your age I lost my tooth not my virginity... I'm just sayin'...

12. Money can't buy you happiness... But I'd rather cry in my Ferrari... I'm just sayin'...

13. Minimum wage for politicians. I'm just sayin'...

So there they are folks - do your civic duty and vote! Then you can tell me what a tool I am for cutting your entry, or tell me how stupid this whole thing is because "they all suck", but we'll all know it's just that you're angry over the size of your... ahem... I digress...

Vote early! Vote often!

CONTEST!

It's time for a new IJS contest...

I'm just sayin'...

Post your best, funniest, most thought provoking, outrageous, grammatically incorrect, obnoxious IJS phrases in the comments section below.

There's no limit on entries, but I will delete any that are overly offensive or abusive (along with spam, links, and other such nonsense...).

It takes some effort to offend me, but I'm not down with hate so just keep that in mind.

The contest starts now, and will run until midnight US EST (GMT - 5hrs.) Sunday, July 20, 2010.

Some things to keep in mind:

Do not post anonymously - if you can't be identified, you can't win. Period. It's likely you found this via Facebook, so just include a link to your FB profile or something. Better yet, log in to Blogger or G-mail or Google and "follow" the page before you post. This way - you'll get updates before everyone on Facebook does, and there's no doubts about your entry/entries.

If there are multiple entries for the same (or similar as determined by me) phrase(s), the first one posted will be entered based on the time-stamp. If the first version is posted anonymously none will be entered. I can't reward copying/stealing... but if you make it your own, add something significant - now we're talking.

All entries posted before the deadline will be reviewed by yours truly, and the best of the lot will be posted in a poll within a couple of days. More details when the time comes.

To be clear - these rules will all be administered at my sole discretion. By playing this little game, you're agreeing to be cool with that. I'm just sayin'... (PS: My lawyer hates me...)

So... What does the winner get you ask?

You'll get a kick-ass t-shirt with your winning phrase and custom artwork designed by your's truly. The winner will be announced to the entire Facebook fan base and all justsayin.us subscribers. You'll get bragging rights and you'll be the envy of your fellow IJS fans...

At least until the next contest... :)

So go ahead! Show me what you got!

I'm just sayin'...

Tuesday, February 9, 2010

I knew this would happen... so...

If you're sore over the 5 finalists - leave a comment with the 5 you would've picked - leaving out any entries submitted anonymously of course...

I basically put the ones that made me laugh the most... there really were a lot of funny entries - it wasn't easy getting down to just 5 - trust me - but in the end I had to make some tough decisions...

If you didn't make the cut this time - don't worry. There will be plenty more opportunities in the future. Keep coming back, contributing your funny comments, and spreading the word...

If you do - then I promise you - one day the whole world will be ours to dominate...

I'm just sayin'...

Saturday, February 6, 2010

Well it certainly wasn't easy... I'm just sayin'...

After long and thoughtful consideration - and eliminating all of the really great anonymous entries... (really!? I'm just sayin'...) here are my top 5... There were a lot of great entries, and it was not easy narrowing them down to just these 5. Seriously - thanks to everyone who entered... Now - place your vote and take part in making HISTORY!... Or at least take part in giving away a funny t-shirt... I'm just sayin'...

Nikki - You shouldn't go around lickin' people's corn... I'm just sayin'...

Parker B. - I'm pretty sure that's not lemonade... I'm just sayin'...

Anthony - Urbandictonary.com says I'm a sex god... just sayin'...

Heather - Edward Cullen is a fictional character and will never love you... I'm just sayin'...

B Ran - Chuck Norris won me this shirt.... I'm Just Sayin'...

So go VOTE!! Tell your friends to vote! It's your DUTY to your fellow IJS fans!! You'd want them to vote if it was your name up there... I'm just sayin'...

Shirts for all 5 finalists will be available soon at: http://www.zazzle.com/Fun_Rise

The winner will be declared after one week of voting. They will receive a t-shirt with their winning phrase and a unique original design by me... which is pretty cool... I'm just sayin'...

Monday, February 1, 2010

It's a CONTEST...

I'm just sayin'...

Submit (in the comments section below) your best original "I'm just sayin'..." phrase. Five finalists will be selected by me, and then voted on by EVERYONE in a future post. The winning submission will get a FREE tee-shirt featuring their phrase and original artwork by yours truly. Other runners up may also be featured on future IJS swag.

So... what are you waiting for?

This is your shot at some IJS fame... I'm just sayin'...
